PIT is a commercially viable, transparency-driven tuna supply chain model that ensures 24/7 vessel monitoring, strong labor protections, and reinvestment of profits into Pacific Island conservation and climate resilience. Incorporated in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), PIT works in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the RMI government and fishing stakeholders in the Parties to the Nauru Agreement region, aligning sovereign tuna resources with responsible market demand. Walmart has engaged as a key retail partner by sourcing PIT tuna for its U.S. private brand portfolio, helping demonstrate commercial viability while advancing traceability and labor safeguards in its supply chain. Operating in a region that supplies roughly half of the world's tuna, PIT directly addresses illegal fishing, forced labor risk, and economic leakage from small island nations. With targeted public investment and policy alignment, the program can scale in-region infrastructure, strengthen U.S. supply chain integrity, reduce geopolitical vulnerability in critical seafood supply, and create a globally replicable model that aligns environmental security, economic development, and responsible trade.
